Perhaps similar: the isolated gas station/store you can still find in thoroughly-rural areas. I found one recently in southern Michigan that still only had one pump. The shelves inside, though, were well-stocked, probably for the local lake traffic.

These rural stores don't create the neighborhood like you're talking about, but they accent it.
