The Virgin Eye, a Micro-Review
This book impressed me so much back in 2017, I bought copies to give to my older children.
It starts slow, but as Daniels, a Jungian analyst and Catholic convert (now deceased), gets rolling, the observations about understanding and cultivating one’s inner life come fast. Just a few samples:
The wise know they start each morning as beginners.
The best response to distractions is no response.
The art of a fulfilled life is to be energetic without tension, dynamic without agitation, serene but not aloof.
Constant thanksgiving makes you more alert and attentive.
Jealously, decisively, guard the peace of your soul.
Thought dissects and discriminates. Thought is the fetid soil of like and quick dislike. Thought forever chatters and analyses; selects, judges, criticizes.
Rushing is a form of aggression. . . Slowness increases enjoyment.
No cure for a stressful and hectic lifestyle is more efficacious than prayer. Ring-fence time for yourself every day to retire within.
Fortunately for you (unfortunately for our western culture), the book apparently didn’t do well. You can buy a used copy for $1.93 at Amazon. The Kindle version is just $7.99 (affiliate link, btw).
